Description
Indulge in a creamy and sweet homemade horchata, the perfect beverage to cool you down on hot summer days.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/4 cup almonds (or pecans)
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 4 cups milk (or dairy-free alternative)
Instructions
- Soak the Rice: Rinse the long-grain white rice under cold water until clear. Soak in enough water to cover for at least four hours or overnight for better creaminess.
- Blend the Mixture: Drain the soaked rice, reserving some soaking water. In a blender, combine the rice, cinnamon sticks, almonds (or pecans), and two cups of fresh water. Blend until smooth.
- Strain the Mixture: Using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain the blended mixture into a large pitcher to remove grainy bits. Press down gently to extract maximum liquid.
- Sweeten the Drink: Mix in sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract into the strained liquid. Stir well and adjust sweetness as desired.
- Chill: Add milk (or dairy-free alternative) into the mixture and stir again. Refrigerate for about an hour until chilled.
- Serve: Pour over ice in tall glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or mint leaves if desired.
