Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or almond/oat milk)
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk if needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour two round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and granulated sugar. Whisk until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Allow cakes to cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  6. In a mixing bowl, beat unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with heavy cream until light and fluffy.
  7. Once cooled completely, stack layers with frosting between them and cover the top and sides with remaining frosting. Slice generously to serve!
